Intoxicants are not always necessary for whatever the purpose is for which they are being used. If their effects are truly known, it is possible for the mind to be trained to replicate those effects. It is, however, necessary to have experienced them to verify whether or not one is successfully replicating them. Outside of when the mind is so trained, in the pursuit of understanding, they can provide worthy assistance in opening your perspective and calming your mind to better focus.
